When financial markets around the world began to collapse, Bret and Tracie Shroyer realized how many adults in the world lacked basic money management skills. Determined that their children would be different, they set out to educate them to be financially savvy and fiscally responsible. At ages 7 & 8 the kids were put on a full budget and became responsible for their own money management. Now teenagers, the Shroyer kids have not only learned how to manage a budget that includes basic necessities, but have also saved money to pay for significant extras in their lives, like laptops and plane tickets.

In this guidebook, the Shroyers explain their process, from teaching kids as young as two what it means to save, to setting up budgets for older kids that include clothing, school lunch and activity fees. They explain what works, what doesn't and even include worksheets and spreadsheets to get readers started.

Investing in Your 401(k) Kid shows parents how to teach kids something they may never have learned themselves to manage money, learn financial responsibility, and stay out of debt.

Investing in Your 401k Kid eBook Bret Shroyer Tracie Shroyer Reviews

My husband and I have never been the greatest money managers but we were never taught how to manage money either. What a terrible travesty! Life would have been so much easier if we had been taught how to save, give and spend wisely! This book will teach you how to teach your kids just that. We have recently paid off all of our debt using Dave Ramsey's program for debt and money management and this book would make him proud!
I will be implementing this program in my home and although I know there will be some tough life lessons during the process I welcome the teachable moments with my children so they don't fall prey to the lures of debt and the slavery it can and will bring to their life if they don't learn these lessons now!
GREAT BOOK!!! I highly recommend it to anyone with children ages 3 and up!
We are raising a generation who feel entitled to have what their parents have. Foreclosures, credit card debt...all of this can be attributed to excessive spending, impulse buying, and wanting it all NOW. The Shroyers have figured out and implemented a solution to ward off this problem in their own home and, in writing "Investing in Your 401(K) Kid," want to share it with all of us. Through a little dose of humor and a lot of ingenuity, this book introduces a concept that is totally out-of-the-box, challenging us to think differently about how to teach our kids a valuable life lesson. This is a must-read for all parents, whether your kids are 2 or 20.
Often I hear people asking, "Why don't kids come with a manual?" The Shroyer's have written a key chapter for what could be a "raising kids manual" with their financial expertise and insight. This book should be part of every child's school education whether enrolled in a private, public or home-schooled environment. Children today are not given the financial education needed for living a debt-free, money-saving, success-rewarding life. We train our children in sports, music, and how to drive, yet in the area of finances we expect our kids to learn through a trial and error method. Bret and Tracie replace "trial and error" with sound practices that not only make sense, but work. In their book, "Investing in your 401K Kid," parents will find the practical tools and resources necessary for training children to succeed and find confidence in money related topics. Especially designed for the economy of today, this book could not be more timely.
This book is excellent, and a must-read for EVERY parent. I love that there are steps available for families in any stage or with kids of any age. I love the way that allowance is explained, and appreciate the fresh ideas!!! I appreciate there is flexibility in this program- I can do the steps at the pace that fits our family, and there is room for us to make mistakes and grow together, without blowing a budget. Perfect book on finance!
Given the amount of angst money problems/unwise debt can create for people, it's a true disservice to our children if we don't teach them how to manage money wisely.

I really appreciated how this book gave good advice for teaching even very young children, in age-appropriate ways, how to manage money, including how to save for something they want until they've got enough to pay for it in cash. I also appreciated that the authors gave the caution that if you try to copy their system *exactly*, it's not going to work. The magic comes with grasping the essentials and then customizing the specifics to work with your own family.
This book does an incredible job at recommending ways to start teaching your kids about money and how to become independent in money management so much younger then you ever thought was possible. That is my favorite part of this book. Most of us wait until the children are older to start making them manage money on some level. But, after this book, I realized how easy it really is to implement steps to start teaching young children how to manage it. The book provides realistic information and advice on how to have your kids functioning completely independent with money management throughout their teen years. Clothes, entertainment, all of it. Very few kids are able to do this in a college setting and even most adults don't have this mastered. This information has helped us lay out a plan with our children so that they do become masters of living within a budget before they leave our home. Thank you for this information and advice on how to set up this plan.
I didn't grow up with good money modelers or with anyone who specifically taught me to be fiscally responsible. My parents were in the same boat--they didn't grow up knowing what they needed to know, so of course, they couldn't help me because they didn't have the tools.

This is the book I wish my parents had had when I was a kid. This is the book that would have allowed my parents to learn what they needed to know (yep--it's good for adults, too, even though Tracie and Bret don't say that in their description!) to help me. This is the book that *has* helped me.

And it can help you, too--whether you need to learn for yourself, or so that you can help a child. It's smart, well done, easy to use and incredibly important. We adults need to be smarter about money, and all of us need our kids to be so; our future depends on that.

You might wonder who Bret and Tracie are. I know I would have if I'd stumbled on the book all by myself. What's more important, though, is who their kids are. And I've met them and spent time with them... they really *are* amazing kids who earn their own money and buy their own stuff, and seem to really like it that way. That Bret and Tracie have raised them using, among other things, the strategies they put in their book makes it beyond relevant...it's practical and 100% doable. They're not preaching, they're living it.

Give yourself and/or a child you love the gift of the learning in this book. You'll be amazed at the goodness you find inside it.
